Determined thieves never let a little thing like
technology to get in their way. With thousands of ATMs
dotting the American landscape, they’ve become a natural
target, and thieves have figured out how to “skim” your
card so they can then use your card number for their
pleasure. Some skimming devices can even record your PIN
as you punch it into the machine.

Thieves use two types of skimmers: One that
actually interfaces with the ATM and another
that operates as an extension of the ATM.
The first one is more obvious and can be
easily spotted. It usually takes the form of
a card reader that is placed in front of or
on top of the real reader which becomes
hidden. When a card is skimmed it records
the information, but the ATM doesn’t read
the card so there is no transaction.

The second type actually works with the real
reader so the ATM will read the card and process the
transaction, but the device has recorded the
information.
Most banks will protect their customers against fraud,
but you should use these tips to avoid getting skimmed:.
